Joe Jackson's Visit To Gary

Posted Image

(23-7-2008) On Tuesday, Joe Jackson was presented with the key to the city of Gary by Mayor Rudy Clay, heard about updated plans for the proposed Jackson Museum and Cultural Center and unveiled a new street sign in honor of the Jackson family at 2300 Jackson St. in front of the original home of the Jackson Five.

The entire interior of Gary City Hall was decked out with large, fresh-cut flower arrangements and draped fabric swags, while signs reading "Welcome Home Joe Jackson" covered all the doors and windows.

Clay said during a brief morning ceremony:

"This key not only represents the key to Gary, but also represents the key that will unlock the door of the future Jackson Family Museum."

Clay, Jackson and Joel Rodriguez, special assistant to the mayor for the department of development, had also met for a roundtable discussion before the key ceremony to discuss plans for the Jackson Family tribute property. The concept first was unveiled by former Mayor Scott King during Michael Jackson's 2003 visit.

Afterwards they left to lunch at the new Dusty's Buffet Restaurant inside the Gary RailCats stadium.

Joe Jackson said about the visit:

"We, as the Jackson family, are proud of our Gary roots," said Jackson, whose last visit to Gary was nearly two decades ago.

So much has changed here since my last visit. There are great days ahead for Gary."

He was particularly pleased to see an easel in the main foyer of Gary City Hall displaying a photograph of Clay with Obama, or as Joe Jackson described him: "the next president of the United States":

"Myself and my entire family supports Obama and he will be our next president."

Joseph “Joe” Jackson was a very hands on father and manager and kept a hawk's eye on the then-growing music career of the Jackson 5, which included his sons Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael.

Joe gave up his own career as a guitar player in a band he started with his brother to launch and manage his sons' music careers.

The Jackson 5 was world-renowned and commanded an international following, and were the first Black teens to do so.

Though Joe had introduced his boys to the industry, shortly after signing the Jackson 5 to Motown, the record company's Barry Gordy took over as manager.

But Joe Jackson never stayed far away from his children's careers, even after the Jackson siblings all eventually left their father’s management company.

He was known to be strict with his children. There were reports that he was even physically abusive.

The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, recalled being so intimidated by his father as an adolescent that Joe's presence made him vomit.

In her 1991 book LaToya: Growing up in the Jackson Family, LaToya Jackson openly and poignantly accused her father of physical and sexual abuse. She said in the book that Joe had sexually abused the oldest daughter, Reebie.

Joe and Reebie denied LaToya’s claims. Latoya, whose singing career was short-lived, later recanted her claims.

He was born July 26, 1928 in Fountain Hill, Ark. In 2002, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame proclaimed Joe Jackson the Best Entertainment Manager of All Time.
