I often wondered who Michael was singing about in the song Remember The Time. But over the weekend I was reading Jermaines book and he said its about Diana Ross. He said that Michael loved and adored her very much.

Here is a reminder of the lyrics.

Remember The Time lyrics

Do You Remember
When We Fell In Love
We Were Young
And Innocent Then
Do You Remember
How It All Began
It Just Seemed Like Heaven
So Why Did It End?

Do You Remember
Back In The Fall
We'd Be Together
All Day Long
Do You Remember
Us Holding Hands
In Each Other's Eyes
We'd Stare
(Tell Me)

Do You Remember The Time
When We Fell In Love
Do You Remember The Time
When We First Met girl
Do You Remember The Time
When We Fell In Love
Do You Remember The Time

Do You Remember
How We Used To Talk
(Ya Know)
We'd Stay On The Phone
At Night Till Dawn
Do You Remember
All The Things We Said Like
I Love You So
I'll Never Let You Go

Do You Remember
Back In The Spring
Every Morning Birds Would Sing
Do You Remember
Those Special Times
They'll Just Go On And On
In The Back Of My Mind

Do You Remember The Time
When We Fell In Love
Do You Remember The Time
When We First Met Girl
Do You Remember The Time
When We Fell In Love
Do You Remember The Time
Those Sweet Memories
(From: http://www.elyrics.n...ime-lyrics.html)
Always Be Dear To Me
And Girl No Matter What Was Said
I Will Never Forget What We Had
Now Baby

Do You Remember The Time
When We Fell In Love
Do You Remember The Time
When We First Met girl
Do You Remember The Time
When We Fell In Love
Do You Remember The Time

Do You Remember The Time
When We Fell In Love
Do You Remember The Time
When We First Met
Do You Remember The Time
When We Fell In Love
Do You Remember The Time

Remember The Times
Ooh
Remember The Times
Do You Remember Girl
Remember The Times
On The Phone You And Me
Remember The Times
Till Dawn, Two Or Three
What About Us Girl

Remember The Times
Do You. Do You, Do You,
Do You, Do You
Remember The Times
In The Park, On The Beach
Remember The Times
You And Me In Spain
Remember The Times
What About, What About...

Remember The Times
Ooh... In The Park
Remember The Times
After Dark..., Do You, Do You, Do You
Remember The Times
Do You, Do You, Do You, Do You
Remember The Times
Yeah Yeah
Remember The Times

I didn't know Michael and Diana had "a thing" described in the song lol I don't have that much trust into Jermaine cause as far as I know they didn't have any contacts around that time when Michael recorded the song so how Jermaine would know?

They had alot of contact and were very close when they were younger. This is a part of the book where he writes about Diana Ross

Quote

His devotion to our goddess of Motown developed from a teenage crush into a teenage infatuation. I think its fair to say that, in his mind, Diana was the first woman he fell in love with. I always wondered if she felt for him the way he felt for her, or if she saw him as the little boy she'd first met. Michael felt she no longer viewed him as a boy, but as a man and a respected artist. They had the kind of true friendship that rarely exists in Hollywood and I think thats what he prized most. As or how intimate they truly became, is where his music - nearly always semi-autobiographical - should speak for itself. Go listen to the wistful lyrics of 'Remember The Time', released in 1992. That song was, as Michael told me, written with Diana Ross in mind; the one great love, that as far as he was concerned escaped him.

Michael was in love in Diana Ross but the lyrics in Remember The Time says about romantic love from other person too. I don't know. Maybe it's just be being negative about Jermaine just cause they didn't have any communication after he left Motown for many years.

Btw, too bad Michael and Diana wasn't close also after. I wonder why is that. Diana Ross said she was surprised she was one of the listed names as children guardian. She said she was surprised cause they haven't talked in years.

Jermaine said in the book that the media made up stories that he and Michael were jealous of each other but he said that is not true. He said that media and fans think they know whats going on in the family but they dont. He said none of the brothers were jealous and they were all proud of each others success. I do think that Jermaine felt left out when the brothers went on to CBS. But its awful what Joe did to him and made him sign the CBS contract after all the other brothers did. Michael still spoke to Jermaine after that even though Joe didnt want him to.

He wrote in his book that Joe made them sign for CBS? Michael explains in his book that Motown didn't give them enough freedom to write and produce their songs and they signed with CBS cause they allowed that. Michael even had a discussion by himself and Berry Gordy where he said either they give freedom to J5 or they are leaving. He never said Joe made them into signing.

I can be wrong but I think I saw it in video where Jermaine says he didn't talk with Michael for years since brothers left Motown.

Jermaine also said that Motown didnt give them much freedom. But that Joe came to Jermaine with the contract and all the brothers had signed before he did. He didnt know what to do. His wife Hazel Gordy didnt mind if she worked for Berry or not. But Jermaine remembered how much Motown did for them and he didnt want to leave. He said at this point he finaly stood up to Joe.

But he said that Joe told him not to go to a show they were doing in Long Island instead he got Randy to go on stage. But Jermaine went to the show anyway. He couldnt get to speak to his brothers but finally got to speak to Michael even though Joe forbid it. Michael said to Jermaine how hard it was to perform that night without Jermaine at his left and he said how upset he was over that.

Yeah, that is something we knew very well.

I know Michael was very sad to not have Jermaine with him in concerts cause he was used to have Jermaine and as far as I remember reading they were closest from all brothers. But I have never thought of Joe forbidding others to talk with Jermaine. I think if they would want to, they would talk cause they weren't that little anymore. Maybe it just seemed to Jermain that Joe forbid them. As far as I know it was very delicate topic in Jackson family. When I saw interview with them after Michael's passing when they did that TV show, they said during that show they finally sit down and talked it through and they said they are ok with it now. That makes me think that brothers wasn't ok with Jermaine separating.

I don't remember Michael writing in his book that Joe forbid brothers to talk with Jermaine. Do you remember?

No I dont remember Michael saying Joe forbid the brothers to talk to Jermine. But Jermaine says this in the book

Quote

I wanted to speak to Michael but what was the point? There was this awkward tension between me and the brothers now, and Joseph had control. What made it worse was that the brothers didnt speak to me for six months of 1976. ONly Mother maintained contact, via phone, reassuring me that I just needed to give everybody time. But it still felt like ex-communication, and I suspected Joseph was behind it because he stopped my weekly allowance ans share of royalties no doubt to teach me a lesson about family.

But Michael did reach out to Jermaine through Berry Gordy and wanted him to come to the concert that the Jackson 5 were doing. He said 'Please get Jermaine go come out here I miss him. It's hard being on stage and looking to my left and not seeing him there.' But Jermaine said that the call was a very brave one and Joseph didnt know Michael did that. When Jermaine turned up the brothers thought he was going to perform. Both he and Michael cried and Joseph asked Jermaine if he was going on said he said no. Jermaine looked at Michael the sadness on his face killed Jermaine. Josephs frown said it all "You are not with us your choice". The brothers never forgave him until June 2009

Btw, recently I came into this... I've read that Teddy Riley said that Michael was talking about Debbie Rowe during the writing of the song. So if I have to believe Jermaine who has lied about Michael and who also as far as I know didn't meet Michael at the time when Michael wrote this song and Teddy Riley who actually worked with Michael at this song, I have to say that I tend to believe Teddy Riley's version more.
