Disney plans 3-D re-releases of 'Little Mermaid,' 'Nemo'

Blame (or thank) Simba. In the wake of the success of “The Lion King 3D,” which has earned $80 million in the U.S. in the last three and a half weeks, Disney has announced theatrical re-releases for four of its animated catalog titles in 3-D — “Beauty and the Beast,” “Finding Nemo,” “Monsters Inc.” and “The Little Mermaid.”

The four films will unspool over the next two years, beginning in January with “Beauty and the Beast,” the 1991 hit that became the first animated film to be nominated for an Oscar for best picture. “Finding Nemo,” first released in 2003 and the fourth-highest-grossing animated movie of all time, will follow in 3-D in September 2012. “Monsters Inc.” (2001) will premiere in 3-D in January 2013, six months ahead of its own prequel, “Monsters University,” a new Pixar film due in June of that year. Finally, “The Little Mermaid” will debut in September 2013.

“The Lion King,” a 1994 film that Disney converted to 3-D for less than $10 million and re-released in September as part of a promotional push for its October Blu-ray release, became a surprise hit for the studio, beating out new releases to become the No. 1 movie two weeks in a row. The re-release has made "Lion King" the third-highest-grossing animated movie of all time domestically, with a haul of more than $408 million.

“Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we’re fortunate to have a treasure trove of both,” Alan Bergman, president of Walt Disney Studios, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3-D –- and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen.”

As someone who can't watch anything in 3D, I don't see how turning a 2D film into 3D would look good. Finding Nemo, yes, I could see that working though. Not Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King :confused

Apparently The Lion King worked out good. I am not sure how. Was it shown in cinemas again in 3D?

I don't know if it was shown here in 3D but it has been released in 3D at the cinema. I think it's doing so well because of the film itself, and not because it's in 3D. I mean, it's a really good film on its own, and I think people are seeing it because of that and because some will have never seen it on the big screen.

I'd like to see Finding Nemo in 3D, with the underwater scenes it could be amazing... but 3D is so awkward the way it is now that it's not really worth it for me to watch anything in 3D. I wish they'd make it accessible for everyone.

what do you mean accessible for everyone? The cinema near you doesn't show 3D at all? :unsure

I wear glasses, and having to try and get 3D glasses on over my own glasses is awkward. That seems to be the only way I could watch any 3D film. I need my glasses to watch anything on a screen, so it wouldn't be fun trying to keep the 3D glasses up through a whole film.

oh really, I haven't thought about it. I think all my friends who needs glasses wear lenses so they don't have this problem.

I would be interested to watch Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and Finding Nemo :)

as Laura also said, what matters more to me is the story, the film itself, and not the 3D

I also wear glasses

so when I go to a 3D movie, I have to wear the 3D glasses over mine

it's a little awkward and a little uncomfortable in the beginning, but after a while, you get used to it :)

and to some movies, it makes a difference to watch them in 3D :)

I can't wear contacts so I still have to wear glasses, sadly.

What type of glasses do they use? I've seen some with the red and green lenses, and some that look like sunglasses. I'm not a fan of the red/green ones, it looks weird. I have a 3D film on dvd that has some glasses with it, so I'll try to watch that and see how I like it :sunflower That's what I was told when I had my eye test this year, to put the 3D glasses over my own glasses. I wasn't sure if it would work.

Our cinema use only 3D glasses that looks like sunglasses. Similar to what Michael used in This Is It.

I like 3D films I remember going to Captain Eo. Funny I havent been to any 3D films since they came out again. Over here you have to pay for the glasses too and I think some people dont want to buy them so they watch the film in 2D instead.

But I think the best ones are 4D and you feel you are in the movie and that its happening all around you. In Universal Theme Park they have a Terminator one and Shrek. In one part of the Shrek movie its like as if the character is going to spit at the audience then some water is sprinkled down on us :lol

I like 4D too

I watched a 4D cartoon in Legoland, in Denmark

it was indeed as if I was inside the cartoon... :lol

I'm not sure I'd like 4D. My cousin's boyfriend (now her husband) had one of those surround sound systems ten years ago and he set it up for one film we were watching, so that the speakers were in different parts of the room. The sound was realistic, probably too realistic (and loud!), and I didn't really enjoy it much.

That's just normal surround sound. They use it everywhere today and in all cinemas.
4D is when they add moving chairs, blowers, sprinklers, light and other stuff to make you feel part of the movie.

That shows me just when I was last at the cinema, about ten years.... Yeah, I still don't think I'd like 4D, sounds a bit too realistic for me. I like being able to watch without being too involved. Maybe I'm simplistic, just watching feels like being part of it anyway, or maybe I'm just old :whistling ;)
