Michael Jackson's family to announce star studded 'Thriller' tribute concert

Posted Image

Late singer's siblings call a press conference in LA for Monday (July 25)

Michael Jackson's family have announced plans for a special tribute concert for the late singer.

His mother Katherine plus his siblings Marlon, Tito, Jackie and LaToya are to attend a press conference on Monday (July 25) in Beverly Hills at 10am (PST) to reveal details of the show, which is expected to focus on his 1982 'Thriller' album.

The gig, which is being organised in conjunction with Global Live Events, will benefit mainstream US and UK charities, according to the LA Times.

It is also expected to feature a host of special guests although further details will not be revealed until the press conference.

Jackson's brother Jermaine tried to organise a star studded concert for the late singer back in December 2009.

It was set to be staged at Wembley Stadium last summer but fell through after the promoters World Awards Media went into liquidation.

Michael Jackson family members plan tribute concert

Several members of Michael Jackson's family unveiled plans on Monday for a tribute concert to the late King of Pop, but performers were unnamed leading to a less-than-thrilling announcement for the "Thriller" singer.

The tribute show, supported by Jackson family matriarch Katherine Jackson, will be held on October 8 in Cardiff, Wales at the Millennium Stadium, which holds about 75,000 people. It will be broadcast live via satellite on pay-per-view television and into movie theaters around the world, some of which will screen it in 3D, said promoter Global Live Events.

Katherine Jackson told reporters at the unveiling in Los Angeles that she is proud of the event and the caliber of singers performing. No names were announced on Monday.

"If my son was here today, he would feel the same way, and so I'd like to say thank you very much for helping to keep my son's legacy alive," she said.

Michael Jackson, who rose to fame in his family of singers then embarked on a solo career that included smash hits such as "Thriller" and "Billie Jean," died in June 2009, of an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol he used as a sleep aid.

His physician at the time, Dr. Conrad Murray, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death. He has pleaded not guilty and a trial will start in September.

Jackson's brother, Jermaine Jackson, tried in vain to mount a tribute concert in Vienna in 2009, but plans were scrapped after he struggled to get big-name acts and the event's organizer went out of business.

Jermaine, and Michael Jackson's father Joe, were not on hand at Monday's announcement. Instead, Katherine was joined by family members, Tito, Jackie, Marlon and La Toya.

"I know that this tribute will be something spectacular," LaToya told reporters.

STATEMENT ISSUED BY JERMAINE & RANDY JACKSON

RE: THE MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE CONCERT

July 25, 2011

Today's press conference in Los Angeles announced a tribute concert to Michael to be attended and supported by the Jackson Family. However, we want to make clear that this does not reflect the position of the entire family.

While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death. As everyone knows, those proceedings commence September 20th, and this "Michael Forever" concert takes place in Cardiff, Wales, on October 8th. In light of this, we feel it is inappropriate to be involved with such an ill-timed event and its promoter, Global Live.

Furthermore, the decision to proceed with this concert disrespects opinions and wishes expressed in the strongest terms to Global Live during conversations in April when this event was presented to the majority of the family as an idea already in its advanced stages.

There will come a time and place for an amazing and deserving tribute to Michael. But we feel that the most important tribute we can give to our brother at this time is to seek justice in his name.

I would go to the concert but I have a feeling this will not happen. Similar to the Jermaine project it will fade away. They don't have any other artists named. Also tickets are quite expensive and then theres some registration period. Not sure if I will give money to this just yet.

From the statement above with Jermaine & Randy. There seems to be a divide amongst the Jackson family. Everybody wants to do something for Michael. Or is some of them looking for there own publicity. From reading Janets book I realised that they are not a close family. So maybe this is just business for them.

I understood about them not being close a long time ago. They were close when they were younger but not anymore. I wonder what was in Janet's book that made you understand?

As for concert. I am really not sure how the tickets will be sold. The higher bid will get the tickets? It is as if you are rich, then you go to the concert. If you are not, then you don't have a chance. I know this is for charity but it is still about if you are rich or not. The normal thing would be give what you can, not give all you have.

And I kind a agree with Jermaine and Randy. At those times we need to focus on justice, not entertainment. Wow, I can't really believe I said I agree with Jermaine lol

Jackson Family Rift Over Tribute Concert

Two of Michael Jackson's brothers have publicly criticised their mother's plans to hold a tribute concert to the singer in Cardiff.

Posted Image

Katherine Jackson revealed details of the show on Monday - saying as many members of the family as are available would take part.

But Michael's brothers Jermaine and Randy called the show "inappropriate" as it falls two weeks into the criminal trial of the doctor charged over his death.

The brothers said the concert went against the opinions and wishes of the majority of the Jackson family.

The Michael Forever show is set to take place on October 8 at the Millennium Stadium, and will be broadcast to 30 countries around the world.

But it will happen during the trial of Conrad Murray, who is charged with manslaughter for giving the singer an overdose of the powerful sedative Propofol.

The opening statements in his trial will take place on September 20, less than three weeks before the Cardiff concert.

Details of the show were announced by the Thriller star's mother Katherine, sister La Toya and brothers Tito, Marlon and Jackie.

They said it would include "the world's greatest performing artists".

Promoter Chris Hunt declined to say exactly who would be on stage, saying that would be revealed at a media conference in London on August 3.

Jackson's mother said: "Michael gave his entire life to the world through his love, his music and his devotion to healing the planet.

"I am positive that this event will be an event great enough in scale, talent and imagination to form a worthy celebration of Michael's life."

Jermaine and Randy tried unsuccessfully to organise their own tribute show after Jackson's death in 2009.

They said they "wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute" that honours their brother.

But they added: "We find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death."

Janet said in her book about the family not having meals together even from when she was young. She would often cook her own dinner from a young age. The family would only eat together for Thanksgiving and special occasions.

I agree with Dimitris that Randy & Jermaine are jealous of the others.

Michael Jackson Family Split On How to Exploit Him

Posted Image

Yesterday, some members of Michael Jackson‘s extended family made an announcement. They say they’re going to be part of some kind of tribute concert to Michael in Cardiff, Wales on October 8th. Good luck. Michael’s mother, Katherine–with LaToya, Tito and Jackie– has been roped into this quote unquote all star show in a stadium that will accommodate 75,000 people. They say the “greatest performers in the world” will be joining them. Ok. No word on what their cut of this concert will be, although there’s mention of two charities receiving something unspecified.

But Michael’s brothers, Jermaine and Randy, were obviously not happy with the deal. They’ve announced that they’re against the concert because it takes place during Dr. Conrad Murray‘s trial for allegedly killing Michael on June 25, 2009. Jermaine and Randy rarely agree on anything and certainly don’t speak to each other much since Randy’s girlfriend (and mother of his two children) left him and had two children with Jermaine, whom she married.

There’s no word on the concert from Janet Jackson, who’s on tour and is no doubt disgusted by this whole enterprise, or from the usually voluble Joseph Jackson. who’s never seen a deal he didn’t like. And what is Global Live, the company behind this project? On their website, Eric Bute, a commercial director with few credits, is listed as the American COO. He directed a music video for LaToya in 2009.

Anger at Michael Jackson tribute concert ticketing system

Posted Image

Fans hoping to go to the Michael Jackson tribute concert will be picked by the amount of money they donate to charity on top of the ticket price.

Chris Hunt, boss of gig organisers Global Live Events, told CNN profits from the October 8 Michael Forever show would go to charities in the United States and Britain. These are The Prince’s Trust, Aids Project Los Angeles and a cancer charity.

But fans logging on to buy tickets, which will not be available until August 4, are told: “Choose your ticket price and tell us how much you will give to the charities at the time of purchase.

“Remember the more you pledge to charity, the more chance you have of getting a ticket.

“Tickets will range from £55 to £289 plus shipping. The amount of your pledge is up to you.”

Jackson fan Daniel Robertson, from Cardiff, was appalled. The 32-year-old and his wife Ceri want five tickets for themselves and their three children.

The British Gas worker, of Mynachdy Road, Gabalfa, said: “It’s going to be like a lottery for the rich for myself and my family because the ticket prices are really high.

“They are steep ticket prices regardless, and then you have to donate to charity.

“I do a lot of work for the MS Society but it is wrong that you should be considered by the amount of money you can give to charity.”

On the concert’s Facebook page Caroline Rowley, who also lives in Cardiff, said: “What an utter disgrace. Choose what price you want to pay and then donate to a charity?

“The more you donate the more you stand to get a ticket? Disgusting.”

Mayah Thomas said: “Makes no sense does it?”

Jackie Segers claimed donations should go to Africa “to honour Michael”.

“I’ll gladly donate then, even if I can’t attend,” she said.

Ben Baggins expressed his “deepest and most sincere indifference”.

“I give my money directly to charities,” he added.

Natascha Derycke branded the affair “so sad”.

The Echo contacted Global Live and was referred to PR company Franklin Rae.

A spokeswoman claimed she was not aware of the situation and was unable to comment.

The Millennium Stadium is owned by the WRU.

A spokesman said: “We will, as usual, ensure that all ticket distribution complies with the stadium’s obligations.”

He insisted the company only provided the venue, adding: “We will ensure that the promoter is aware of any concerns raised in relation to the sale and distribution of tickets to the concert.”

wow, I am not alone in this! Remember I said the same in the thread announcing the concert. It is just a game between rich ppl.

I really don't think Jackson has thought all through this. Fans with less money also want to go to concert and they also have right to get the ticket.

Yes Mag it is only for the rich. It all depends on how much money someone will pay for the charity then they may or may not get a ticket. In one way its good for the charity but in another its just a disgrace how the money is being distributed. Of course its all about money the Jacksons want there cut and so does the charity.

Michael Jackson's Family Shoots Down Tribute Concert

Singer's estate denies support for event in Wales

Michael Jackson's estate have released a statement denying their support for a concert paying tribute to the late King of Pop scheduled for October 8th in Cardiff, Wales. According to the estate, they had never authorized the use of Jackson's name for the concert, which is called Michael Forever: The Tribute Concert.

In addition to the trouble with Jackson's estate, the tribute concert has also lost support from the singer's brothers Jermaine and Randy, who announced that they were not comfortable with the fact that the show would take place during the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician charged with involuntary manslaughter in his death. In a joint statement, the brothers said that they support the idea of the concert, but they feel that "the most important tribute we can give to our brother at this time is to seek justice in his name."
