Michael Jackson's `Thriller' jacket up for auction

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – The jacket Michael Jackson wore in his "Thriller" video is hitting the auction block.

Auction administrator Darren Julien says the red and black leather jacket is "the most recognized and significant piece of pop culture" to come up for sale, and he expects it to fetch at least $200,000 at the Music Icons auction on June 25 and 26 at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills.

Other Jackson items on the block include the wig he wore when he announced his ill-fated "This Is It" concert series, his shirt from the "Scream" video and the battered mailbox from the Carolwood Drive estate where Jackson died at age 50 in 2009.

The Music Icons sale also includes memorabilia from Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, among others.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (KABC) -- Michael Jackson's jacket, one of the most recognizable garments in music, sold for $1.8 million on the auction block on Sunday.

The black and red calf leather jacket, with the label Marc Laurent Paris, was estimated to be worth between $200,000 to $400,000.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the jacket will benefit The Shambala Preserve, Jackson's two Bengal tigers, Thriller and Sabu, have been living since 2006.

Jackson's red jacket from the "Thriller" video was among hundreds of items described as the most historic collection of music memorabilia being offered to the public.

"It's probably the best auction we have ever assembled," said Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien's Auctions.

The auction was held at the Julien's Auctions Gallery on Saturday and Sunday in Beverly Hills.

"Michael's global appeal continues to rise," Nolan said. "This is the legacy. This is what Michael Jackson wanted. What would be his legacy? And we have it."

Other items that belonged to Michael Jackson were also for sale, like one of his wigs and the actual glove he wore to the American Music Awards in 1984.

Jackson 'Thriller' jacket sells for $1.8 million

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – The red and black leather jacket worn by Michael Jackson in his "Thriller" video has been sold for $1.8 million, a day after the second anniversary of the pop icon's death.

The jacket, which fetched several times its estimate of between $200,000 and $400,000, has "Love Michael Jackson" written on the sleeve, and a dedication in the lining to his long-time costume designers, to whom he gave it.

No details were disclosed about the buyer, after the amount of the winning bid was posted on the website of Beverly Hills auction house Julien's.

The auctioneer described the jacket as "among the most recognizable and famous garments of the 20th century," saying it sparked a 1980s fashion craze when it was copied and sold to adoring Jackson fans worldwide.

"The black and red style of the jacket became so identifiable with Jackson's groundbreaking (video) that he continued to use jackets of the same design when performing the song 'Thriller' for the duration of his career," it said.

The jacket is one of two which Jackson used during the ghoulishly iconic video, the other being on display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

Part of the proceeds from the sale will go to the Shambala Preserve in California, where Jackson?s two Bengal tigers, Thriller and Sabu, have been living since 2006 when Jackson left the Neverland Ranch, it said.

On Saturday, fans paid their respects on the second anniversary of Jackson's death at the age of 50. He died from an overdose of the sedative propofol while preparing for a comeback series of concerts in London.

His personal doctor, Conrad Murray, is due to go on trial for alleged manslaughter in Los Angeles in September.

I think this jacket not only could but should be placed in museum. I mean this is the only video that got into US film registry. The video, the song and the album is historical and changed the music and music videos.

Museums do not pay for items. Those has to be donated. Maybe it will happen someday. But everything can't go to a museum :)

Sure. Maybe in 100 years. Today you wouldn't go to the museum to watch Michael.

We are talking about Thriller jacket, right? or other costume or things related to Michael. Yes, I would be interested in them.

Yes. I just mean it might not be something coming to a 'normal' museum at the moment. Maybe a Michael or music museum.

it is still museum. That would be nice. I actually also thought about Michael or music museum. It is much better than some antique museum, at least in my opinion.

Don't be worried. People can do whatever they want, when they buy things :)

for some items there is some rules. But they are historical items. Some you can't take out of the country, some you can't destroy etc... It's after 100 years as you said when ppl will realize that Michael was really a legend they will cry about what they have destroyed and will try to put everything together and place in museum. But I think it's historical already and is a place in museum. Michael is already a legend

'Thriller' jacket to go on tour for charity

Posted Image

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A famed red-and-black calfskin jacket Michael Jackson wore in the groundbreaking "Thriller" music video is going on tour.

The jacket's new owner, Texas commodities broker Milton Verret, said Tuesday he plans to take the classic clothing item around the world to raise money for charities that help sick children.

Verret, who's from Austin, says he intends to line up corporate sponsors to fund the tour.

He purchased the jacket for $1.8 million last month at a Beverly Hills, California, auction.

The jacket is one of two Jackson wore during the filming of the 1983 video. Jackson can be seen wearing the jacket in a scene with a troupe of zombies who rise from their graves and break into a dance routine.
