Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in held on April 22, 1970.


40 years has passed from the first Earth Day and ppl still don't get it. They just take from Earth and hardly anyone gives back and cares. I think the story is well known for Michael's fans if you remember the Earth Song part from This Is It movie.

We have a big joint work around the country around this time and this year it will be in 24th April. I will take part in it and will clean the surroundings. You can't imagine what kind of things ppl throw out on street being lazy to take it to the garbage can. And it makes me so mad cause I also have to live in here. They can mess around in their apartments and I wouldn't care but Earth is everybody's home. You're not living alone on this Planet!

Love your home, cause it's the only one we have!

Talking about this joint work this Saturday. After cleaning the area, if everything goes as planned I could also join the project where ppl will paint some old fabric's wall about Earth theme and how to get the message to ppl. Ppl can get in groups or paint alone. I may paint something about Heal The World theme. I hope I can get some more Michael's fans with me. Maybe that could be the same Earth pic I posted in this thread above

So, we had the joint work day today!
We didn't do any cleaning this year, because the main idea was to embellish the wall around an abandoned rubber factory.
In spite of a cold rain with snow, we managed to finish our "paintings". Here's the result (Eriny, Magic, 30 thousand faces):



Maybe Magic and 30 thousand faces will tell you more about it soon.

That's mine hehe the details isn't what I wanted cause it was cold and I was so afraid the rain would come again till my painting would dry so it would wash away so I was rushed by weather to finish it sooner

The big joint work event happens in Latvia for the third time. Its idea was taken from Estonia who first had The Big Joint Work event in 3rd May 2008. Then Latvia saw what a great idea it was and the first event in whole country happened in 13rd September 2008. The last year it was moved to spring to clean Latvia for the summer. This year it was in 24th April. The aim of the project is to have Latvia as the cleanest area in the world in 10 years. The home page of the project cays “It sounds unreal? Let’s just try! Everything is in our hands and we are the ones that will make the better future.”

There were 1345 official registered event places. But in fact there were more. Cause lots of schools or neighbors made their own unofficial events by cleaning their own territories around their houses, schools and work places.

The idea of the event is to clean area where we live in. The participants were voluntary who care about the environment. The official data with how many ppl joined the event will be known in a week but organizators says it could be around 200 000 ppl. They were cleaning, streets, yards, forests, near the lakes, rivers and sea, even under the water. Latvia became richer with few new parks, trees were planted, new bird houses made, and old things were fixed.

By now it is known that till 6pm 14641 tonnes garbage bags were collected and taken to dump. More bags are waiting their garbage cars to be collected. It was told the bags will be taken out in max a week.

The official Big Joint Work event took place in whole country from 9am till 2pm but after official 2pm ending time ppl still didn’t go home and carried out with cleanings till their strength was over or till they run out of bags. The bags were offered for free by organizators although the gloves you had to buy in stores on your own. In some places ppl were offering also dinner or sandwiches to the event workers.

Also popular ppl decided to take a part in cleaning works including musicians and politicians. Among them was also our president with his wife.

I and my friends personally joined the official event place to make some fabric wall more beautiful and attractive to passbyers. The place is located by the main river in Riga – Daugava, and was told to be one of the favorite walking places for ppl living in the area. As it was near the river it was very windy but we decided to not give up. We started making paintings on the wall around 9.30am. After we did the first parts by painting the background and making few other paintings, it started to rain and hail really bad. The color that wasn’t dried yet started to pour down from my painting and I had to do extra job later to save the painting. When we all were wet and frozen we decided to make a pause as it’s no use to pain in the rain if wet color pours down. So we went to the nearest mall to dry out ourselves, eat some sandwiches and drink warm tea. To dry our clothes faster we had to dry them with the dryer in toilet just like Mr. Bean did it in one of his sketches lol After we warmed up and were half dry we went back to our wall. The sun was shining still warming us while we continued to paint. Ppl were coming and going, starting and finishing their painting so it’s hard to tell how many ppl joined the wall painting. Later the clouds came again and we were afraid it would start to rain while our paintings are still wet so we tried to finish as soon as possible. I think we finished around 3am.

When I returned home and saw reports on the news, read the articles and saw pics in the net, I was happy. I was crying to find out that ppl actually care and are ready to do something. This is exactly what Michael said – it starts with us, no one else but us. And it’s good to know there are at least 200 000 ppl in my country who understands that. It made me happy and to start thinking maybe it’s not too late and there still is hope.
