Sony, Jackson estate reach 200-million-dollar deal

The estate of Michael Jackson has landed the late King of Pop the biggest recording deal in history: a $200 million guaranteed contract with Sony Music Entertainment for 10 projects over seven years may include computer video games as well as music and film releases, the Los Angeles Times said.

The record-breaking contract through 2017 could be worth up to $250 million if certain conditions are met. One of the albums will be of never-before-released Jackson recordings that will come out in November.

Future projects may also include a DVD compilation of videos and a re-release of "Off the Wall," Jackson's fifth studio album, which first came out in 1979, accompanied by some unreleased material.

One of the projects already counted in the contract was the two-disc album that accompanied "This Is It" film.

"During his life, Michael's contracts set the standard for the industry," said John Branca, the co-administrator of the Jackson estate, in a statement prepared for release Tuesday. "By all objective criteria, this agreement with Sony Music demonstrates the lasting power of Michael's music by exceeding all previous industry benchmarks."

Rob Stringer, chairman of Sony Music's Columbia Epic Label Group, said in prepared remarks, "We're dedicated to protecting this icon's legacy and we're thrilled that we can continue to bring his music to the world for the foreseeable future."

"The audio rights span across different projects," said Stringer. "There may be theater. There may be films and movies. There may be computer games -- or multimedia platforms that I don't know about today that will happen in 2015."

The deal, described by Sony and Jackson's estate as the most lucrative music contract on record, would guarantee the late singer's heirs at least 200 million dollars, the Wall Street Journal said.

So, some of the music that is going to be released is unreleased stuff from MJ. Well, if that's so then I guess I'm going to go more broke because I'm going to have to have it.

they didn't mean the songs for games and movies. But movies and games ABOUT Michael.

And yes, it's knows Michael wrote music for Sonic game/ games. But that's another topic.

I read on Karen Fays twitter page that she is not happy with this news and things Sony are making money on Michaels name. Which it seems as if thye are they are allowed to release this stuff or dow hat they want with Michaels name knowing they will get money.

The reason why Karen is not happy is that she will not make money from it...

About the deal. Yes, Sony will make money and they know that. They always knew that and fans are like suckers buying things (suckers in a good way cause I know we can't resist, hey, I am also a fan ;) ). But it also had a god point. Michael will not be forgotten which is good. New generation will hear about him and will be interested to check who he was.

And about holograms, I believe it will be like that. They did it with Elvis not that long time ago. Technology will become even better.
