Jackson fans line up for 'This Is It' tickets

LOS ANGELES – Sally Rubio and dozens of Michael Jackson fans were among the first to line up for "This Is It" tickets.

The winding queue for tickets to the first public screenings of the documentary opened late Thursday afternoon in the courtyard outside the Nokia Theatre at the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles. The film features a behind-the-scenes look at Jackson preparing for the series of London shows he was rehearsing for before he died June 25.

"I've never done something like this in my life," said Rubio, 53, "but M.J. is worth it."

Tickets for the advance shows aren't scheduled to go on sale until early Sunday morning, meaning Rubio and her fellow devotees may spend days in line. The first 500 fans in line have been promised commemorative lenticular tickets designed by Jackson for the London concerts at the O2 Arena, another reason Rubio was motivated to wait in line for over 48 hours.

"I heard they are very beautiful," she said.

A total of 3,000 movie tickets will be available for the early Oct. 27 shows at L.A. Live's new Regal Cinemas Stadium 14, marking the movie theater's grand opening. It's the only screening location offering the advance shows and commemorative tickets. "This Is It" will begin its limited, two-week run at movie theaters nationwide on Oct. 28.

The Sony Pictures film, crafted from hundred hours of rehearsal footage, is directed by longtime Jackson collaborator Kenny Ortega, the "High School Musical" director who had been working with Jackson on the "This Is It" concerts. The movie will feature Jackson rehearsing a number of his songs for the show as well as interviews with his friends and family.

Several of the fans who arrived when the line opened Friday brought chairs — one per person — and umbrellas for the long wait ahead of them. AEG, which operates the L.A. Live complex and organized the Jackson concerts, said that no tents, alcohol, cooking or boom boxes were permitted in line. Onsite monitors would issue passes for restroom and food breaks.

"It was a last-minute decision," said Trudy Miles, who was waiting in line with her daughters. "We were getting ready to go to the park, and my daughter texted me and told me the tickets were going on sell today. We were going to see it at the theater near our house, but we thought this would be special, so we loaded up the car with stuff and came down here."

I just called Villagecinemas in Greece, because I saw that a few hours ago they added This Is It in the Coming Soon section in their website. Tickets presales will begin on Sunday 27th.

I also called Audiovisual, which is distributor for Greece, but they didn't have any information about avant premiere or any other event for the film kickoff for the moment. They only informed me that it will be on all multicinemas (e.g. Villagecinemas, Odeon, Ster cinemas etc.)

Today I finally had the guts to actually watch the TRAILER. It feels weird... I dunno whether I should laugh or cry. It looks amazing... but it feel sooooo sad too. :(

I'll try to call tomorrow for tickets. There are pre-sales here too. We can start calls after 12 am so... But I'm not sure I'll get tickets, I'm sure people will be crazy about them. But let's hope anyway :)

Jackson fans camp out for tickets to late pop star's film

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Michael Jackson devotees have been camping for days in downtown Los Angeles to get tickets for the debut of a film about the fallen pop star rehearsing for a concert tour derailed by his death.

By Saturday morning about 300 people were ensconced in a queue in front of the Nokia Theatre, where commemorative tickets for debut showings of "This Is It" were to go on sale the first minute into Sunday.

"We don't sleep, we stay up all night," said Leticia Martin, who had staked out a spot near the front of the queue.

The 26-year-old medical technician spent Friday night learning dance moves to Jackson's iconic "Thriller" song from costumed zombies that entertained those waiting in line.

Some fans snuggled in sleeping bags on the concrete, while others napped in folding chairs.

"We're like one big family," Martin told AFP as she scanned the encampment.

Theatre operators expecting a crowd had used metal barriers to cordon off eight rows, three of which were empty leaving plenty of dancing room for a group reminiscent of a small tribe of pop music refugees.

Jackson fans were eager to get their hands on some of the first 500 movie tickets, which the film's promoters said will commemorate "This Is It" concerts Jackson had planned in London.

For some waiting here, getting a Jackson-designed piece of pop music history like the tickets was worth relying on public restrooms and missing work and sleep.

"I was up all night," said Andrew Wynglarz, a 26-year-old bus driver from Southern California.

Wynglarz sat with three friends and proudly recounted having had the good fortune to get inside the nearby Staples Center for a globally-watched July 7th Jackson memorial event.

Brenda Gonzalez said she joined the ticket camp at 3 o'clock Friday morning with her sister and a friend.

"I only slept like four hours, and I sleep 12 usually," said Gonzalez, a 26-year-old unemployed Los Angeles woman who was also among the fans that managed to get tickets for the Jackson memorial.

Fans in the queue expressed surprise that excitement surrounding the pending film release had thus far not matched the huge outpouring of emotion that followed Jackson's death on June 25th at the age of 50.

"It's a movie; maybe if he was still alive...," said Jimmy Lee, a 34-year-old Jackson imitator who performs for tourists on Hollywood Boulevard.

"After the memorial, it all calmed down," Wynglarz added. "This is just like a bonus."

Lee was adamant that people like him who had been camped out for tickets since Thursday afternoon were proof that "People are still reacting to his death. We're still kind of mourning."

About 3,000 tickets go on sale starting early Sunday for the behind-the-scenes concert film's Oct. 27th debut in Los Angeles.
Martin said that the long wait for prime tickets was only the first hurdle and that Jackson lovers would be again queuing for preferred seats inside theaters on opening day.
"We're going to have to get here early," Martin intoned.

This is the thing I love Michael's fans! I love them for being crazy! I like to be crazy myself. It's not that they just stand there. They are together and it's fun. Like one fan described, it's like a family in there. You are not just alone and boring, you are having fun with meeting other fans. I think if I would be there I would do the same :D
