Harmony Korine's 'Mister Lonely' a musical escape

Posted Image

At times very real and heartbreaking, Harmony Korine's first film in nearly a decade, "Mister Lonely," isn't short on its share of warped moments, as its characters and scenes exist just left of something comfortable. A seemingly conventional fish-out-of-water film, as it unfolds, "Mister Lonely" strives to become, in the words of it main character, "less ordinary."

One of the reason film largely succeeds in this mission is due to its music. Taking its name from the classic Bobby Vinton tune, "Mister Lonely" is inspired by song from the get-go, even when music isn't on the screen. Its hauntingly hypnotic score comes from J. Spaceman, the psychedelic rocker behind Spaceman 3 and Spiritualized, and the experimental music of the Sun City Girls.

The film, to be released May 2 by IFC, follows a Paris-based Michael Jackson impersonator (Diego Luna), a street performer who has a chance encounter with a Marilyn Monroe impersonator (Samantha Morton). Marilyn persuades Michael to move with her to a commune that's become sort of a safe-haven for celebrity impressionists, where the goal is to build a theater that will showcase a circus-like revue.

Luna, who starred in "Y Tu Mama Tambien," doesn't look much like Jackson, but he has his dance moves down pat.

Speaking after a screening of the film Monday night in Los Angeles, the controversial writer/filmmaker ("Kids," "Gummo") Korine discussed meeting some celeb impersonators during the process of working on the film.

"They were obsessive," Korine said. "They looked very little like the people they were impersonating. They just willed themselves."

Indeed, one of the opening scenes in the beautifully shot film is Luna's Jackson dancing, sans music, on the streets of Paris. It's implied, perhaps, that he's moving to Jackson's "Man in the Mirror," but the only sound effects the audience hears are those of Luna's kicks and swipes in the air. He's alone in his world, and the only song here is in his head.

When asked by an audience member in the below sound-clip if he ever sought out Jackson's permission or music, Korine said the thought didn't cross his mind.

Instead, later in the film, Luna moves to the music of the more frantic, electronic hip-hop of Spank Rock's "Backyard Betty," but that's as modern as the music in "Mister Lonely" gets. While Korine draws heavily from African field recordings and American folk from the 1930s to the 1950s (he briefly discusses his thoughts on picking sons in the below audio clip), it's the music of Spaceman and the Sun City Girls that fuel "Mister Lonely''s" eccentricities.

Mister Lonely
By Cam Lindsay

Harmony Korine’s third feature film involves a young Michael Jackson impersonator who travels to Scotland to hang out with Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, James Dean and the Pope, among others. So, yes, another dose of the surreal from the eccentric wunderkind, but what deserves to steal the spotlight is the film’s equally far-out score. Hiring both Jason “Spaceman” Pierce and Sun City Girls to muster up suitable music, Korine has scored big here (no pun intended). What’s most fascinating about Mister Lonely is how harmoniously the two sides combine into one body of work, so much so that at times you’ll feel fooled by which song is by whom. Spaceman is downright surprising, most notably with “Panama 1,” a pool of tribal flutes, guitar scratching and feedback that shows there’s a whole lot more to this man than the intergalactic gospel we’re familiar with. More at home is “Pope in the Bath,” a lethargic yet tender lullaby laid down with angelic pianos and sleepy slide guitar. On the flipside, the Girls also turn in poignant moments, best of which is felt in “Mr. Lonely Viola,” a string-led rearrangement of Bobby Vinton’s unforgettable “Lonely.” Despite some eye-opening turns by Pierce and a few standouts that deserve repeat listens, like most scores, Mister Lonely needs the visuals like it needs the audio to truly succeed. Together, though, I can imagine they make a perfect marriage. (IFC)

This may be interesting! It seems like it has a deep story behind all that. I wonder where it will be possible to see the movie. Anyone knows?

I love the concept of this film and I really want to see it as well I found an article about it today from the Moscow News Weekly Magazine

Directed by Harmony Korine. Written by Avi Korine and Harmony Korine. Starring Diego Luna, Samantha Morton and Denis Lavant. 112 min. PG.

■ Review top sheet: a whimsical, eccentric, meandering story with no real point but a few top moments. It's a bit like chewing your way through a bowl of healthfood-shop muesli: while most of it is so dull you know it must be doing you good, you still come across the occasional yummy bit.

■ Will you like this film?

Yes, if you are able to let this film just be what it is: a mad, self-indulgent ramble ennobled by a few moments of genius.

No, if you want plot development and escalating tension of any kind.

Maybe, if you think European cinema is intrinsically superior to MacHollywood by virtue of the fact that it hails from Europe.

■ General comments: I was attracted by the core idea: a sad Michael Jackson impersonator (how could an impersonator be anything but sad given the original material) battling against a world that doesn't understand him. This was a great idea for a story. The result, however, feels like it has missed something. A bit like a cake that hasn't been allowed to rise properly, the outcome is lame and disappointing - despite the fact that there are quite a few sweet currents in the mixture.

Samantha Morton is a very strong actress in my book. I was also interested to note that she sports a formidable rack. I mention this not to further infuriate certain sections of my female readership (perish the thought) but because it is a bit of a plot point. This gives you an idea of how threadbare the plot in total is. However, Ms. Morton - and her bodily attributes - handle the lack of underlying motivation extremely well.

A few moments are wonderfully mad and made me laugh out loud. The spectre of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Madonna, Michael Jackson and the Three Stooges - completely straight-faced - decked out in bee nets practicing Tai Chi, and that of the Queen lighting up a cigarette as she lay in bed with the Pope, were two images that really tickled me. To be sure, the film does not lack good moments. But it does lack cohesion and a really good reason to exist. It's more an excuse for some wonderful vignettes. I feel the same way about Oscar Wilde. Genius though he may have been, I find most of his work (if one leaves aside his most successful children's tales and poetry) exists primarily as a vehicle for his aphorisms. That is the way to get quoted: write short, clever things that can easily be memorised and don't need a context. Mister Lonely has the same quality. You could take several two-minute slots which, if seen in isolation, would leave you feeling this was a must-see film. The whole, however, does not live up to the promises of some of its parts. Writing excellent moments is not hard. Writing excellent moments that dovetail end-to-end to create an unbroken chain of excellence in the form of a devastatingly great story - that's hard.

The last fifteen minutes of the film are almost entirely superfluous and embarrassing to watch. Directors who write their own films almost always feel the need to over-explain what we just watched. A bit like the moment when the policeman asks the detective why he did such-and-such. It should have either been clear from the action or cut from the film altogether. If it needs explaining, it means the film was crap, which, ultimately, on balance, this one is.

■ Story comments: unfocused and rambling.

■ Acting comments: Morton is greater than the script really allows and does well.

■ Substance comments: can being someone else help you become who you really are?

■ Film craft comments: in need of a full re-write and an objective, hard-minded editor.

■ A taste of the story: a sad, Michael Jackson impersonator meets a sad, Marilyn Monroe impersonator and they go off to live in a castle with a load of other sad and utterly hopeless people just like them.

Ratings

Out-of-five star ratings:

■ Story: *

■ Acting: ***

■ Substance: **

■ Film craft: **

A lot of critics are not good judges from what I have seen and they have said but you could be right. We'll never know if you don't see it. It sounded like the critic wasn't a fan of Gene Wilder I loved everything he was in so....at least every show I have seen I mean tv.

I was starting to tell the weird things in the movie but it is not even descridable. I didn't even see some story in there. There is some chats between persons, nothing more. At least I didn't hear anything more cause I may start thinking about other things cause it was so BORING that you can't even concentrate on the movie, your brain is starting to think about other things lol

One of the things... Nun accidental falls out from the plain, it seems like she will hit the ground but we see how she falls on the ground and then screaming "It's miracle" and something about God comes out from jungle or forest, not even sure what was it. In the end of movies don't know why but nuns jump out of he plain without parachutes and in the last scene we see they all are dead on the ground. And I have to remind, this movie is not about nuns. I don't even understand why they were there :lol

And the way how director made the movie, actors to play is just stupid. Not sure if I wanna cry or laugh about it actually. That is not funny and it's also not sad. It's... hmm... nothing...

Although they could make a good movie if they would have good story in it. I mean really good movie, deep into story and those ppl. But there is something they went wrong with it.

I take this movie more like experimental movie.

You should me able to find the movie in torrents.

Darn I would like to see the movie. There's only one shot one life and that person making that movie better have done it all in fun. I don't see the plot as him liking nuns at all and making fun of God. If that was the case no wonder he got a crappy result!

you can take it as fun and you can take it as weird. It depends on person's sense of humour. I took it weird and boring :)
