What's Happening With Ms. Jackson?
Janet Jackson Cancels Six Concerts and Is Recuperating from Undisclosed Illness

By LUCHINA FISHER
Oct. 7, 2008

Since last week, when she became "suddenly ill" and had to be hospitalized, Janet Jackson has cancelled six concerts in what some were calling her comeback tour.

Is it vertigo, as her brother Randy reportedly said last week, or is Janet suffering from an ailment more common to aging '90s pop stars: a mid-life career slump?

At 42, Jackson is certainly not the only middle-age female pop star rocking the concert circuit. Just look at Madonna, 50, whose "Sticky and Sweet" tour is virtually sold out and getting rave reviews. Or Tina Turner, who is about to embark on another tour at nearly age 69.

Why does Jackson, seemingly the most stable of the Jackson clan, appear to be losing her footing?

"Her music hasn't really evolved as she has aged as a person, said Jonathan Cohen, a senior editor at Billboard magazine. "She's still doing the sex kitten thing, which, at 42, really isn't believable."

Pearl Jr., who runs the Michael Jackson fan site MichaelJacksonInsider.com, spoke to Randy last Tuesday, she said in an e-mail to ABCNews.com. He told her, "Janet is doing OK, she suffers from vertigo," which she posted on her web site.

But the former Jackson family spokesman known only as Phoenix is skeptical of reports of vertigo, adding that Randy has been out of touch with his sister.

"It's not really Janet, it's the promoter," said Phoenix, who stays in contact with the family and fronts a Jackson tribute band called the "Dancing Machine Revue."

"They are pulling out due to bad ticket sales. Janet might have been one of the greatest pop icons in her time. But Janet Jackson, at 42 years old, does not have the same appeal as in '89 with 'Rhythm Nation.' Other artists took that throne -- Ashanti and Beyonce. This is what you call a publicity stunt."

Jackson has not had a great year. Her album "Discipline" was meant to be something of a comeback after her last two albums tanked, following the 2004 Superbowl, in which Justin Timberlake accidentally exposed her bare breast during a wardrobe malfunction. Released in February, "Discipline," considered to be one her best albums in years, has not even sold half a million copies.

"It was dead on arrival," Cohen said.

Then, last month, she announced she was parting ways with the album's label, Island Def Jam Records, after only 14 months. In a video blog for rap-up.com, Jackson's longtime collaborator Rodney Jerkins said, "We didn't get the support from the record company. [Janet] felt like it wasn't pushed. I felt like it wasn't pushed correctly. She just didn't get her just due as an artist of that magnitude."

And now the "Rock Witchu" tour, Jackson's first North American tour in seven years, appears to be in peril. While Jackson has not completely filled the arenas where she has performed, with six shows reporting earnings so far, she had drawn 53,000 fans and grossed nearly $6 million in ticket sales, according to Billboard.

What's less clear is how the show will go on with Jackson's undisclosed illness.

Last Monday, Jackson became "suddenly ill" and was hospitalized in Montreal shortly after she arrived for a show. She cancelled concerts in Boston and Philadelphia on Wednesday and Thursday.

Then, over the weekend, her publicist said in an e-mail that after Jackson arrived in Greensboro, N.C., hoping to perform on Saturday, a local doctor advised her not to go on stage after it became "evident" she had not fully recovered. Jackson postponed Saturday's show, one on Sunday in Atlanta and a third scheduled for today in Fort Lauderdale.

Jackson's reps have not disclosed the illness she's "recuperating" from, leaving the celebrity media to speculate.

But Ian Drew, a senior editor at US Weekly, believes it may be nothing more than exhaustion. "She hasn't toured for a while," he said. "People are putting a negative spin on things. I think it's very undeserved. This last record was one of her better records ever. But it's always hard with these kind of legendary pop stars. They become trapped in their persona and it's really hard to get new fans. It's about keeping the core group. She risks abandoning them if she changes too much."

Jackson has also taken a few shots lately for her weight and personal life. Some stories have hinted that her weight is creeping up again. Jackson infamously dropped 60 pounds in 2006 and posed for US Weekly covers, flashing her famous abs again.

Drew says she still looks great. "She's come out and said when she's not touring, she is less likely to exercise as much," he said. "But we're not seeing these huge numbers."

The self-confessed yo-yo dieter is writing a book about her battle of the bulge, that is scheduled to come out by year's end.

Last month, the New York Post reported that Jackson's longtime boyfriend Jermaine Dupri, head of Island Def Jam, had too much of a good time on his 36th birthday and vomited in Jackson's lap. Jackson fled from the restaurant in her chauffeured Maybach, according to the Post.

"I highly doubt that that happened," Drew said. "The thing about Janet is she is very loyal. She tends to stick with people, her dancers, her hairdresser. She's always in a relationship. I think she and Jermaine are a great couple. They're very solid."

Jackson's career is another matter. "I think she should just do something totally different," Phoenix, the former family spokesman, said. "She should just act. You can grow old with acting."

"I would personally like to see her do something a little bit surprising, like starting her own label and doing something unpredictable," said Cohen, who thinks she's off to a good start by leaving her old label. "Would it be so crazy to bring Michael on stage each night? He needs something like that. And so does she."

JANET'S 'VERTIGO' REPORTS DENIED: Publicity firm says Randy Jackson interview 'never happened.'(October 8, 2008)

*Santa Barbara-based firm One Way Publicity is denying recent reports that Janet Jackson's brother Randy said in an exclusive interview with a Michael Jackson fan site that her recent hospitalization was due to vertigo.

Jackson has canceled several shows on her Rock Witchu Tour after falling ill just hours before a show last Monday in Montreal. Her camp has yet to disclose the nature of the illness.

"Rumors started by the owner of a Michael Jackson fan site has stated that they had an exclusive interview with Randy Jackson, and during this interview he said that his sister Janet had canceled shows because she has an illness called 'Vertigo,'" read an e-mail sent to EURweb.

"Randy has not and will not speak publicly about the health of his sister, or her reasons for canceling any of her shows. This 'interview' never happened."

LATEST: JANET JACKSON's brother RANDY has hit back at reports he revealed all about his sick sister's vertigo.

The Jackson brother insists it was an impostor who broke the bogus news about the cause of the Nasty singer's concert cancellations on a Michael Jackson fansite, not him.

Randy Jackson reportedly wrote, "Janet is doing okay, she suffers from vertigo." But now the real Randy has spoken out, insisting he'd never discuss family health matters online.

In a terse posting on his own website, a spokesman for Jackson writes, "Rumours started by the owner of a Michael Jackson fan site has stated that they had an exclusive interview with Randy Jackson, and during this interview he said that his sister Janet had cancelled shows because she has an illness called "Vertigo."

"Randy has not and will not speak publicly about the health of his sister, or her reasons for cancelling (sic) any of her shows. This "interview" never happened."

Janet Jackson has cancelled a string of concerts on her North American tour as she continues to battle a mystery illness.

She first fell ill last month (29Sep08) just before a show in Montreal, Canada, and was taken to hospital.

Jackson and her aides have refused to comment on her current condition or what ails her.

Wassup with Janet Jackson?

Janet Jackson’s Rock Witchu North American concert tour is turning into a wash-out, and no-one is saying why.

The kid sister of Michael Jackson postponed yet another concert, set for Monday night, and hasn’t performed at all since her show in Montreal was called off at the last minute on Sept 29.

Jackson was rushed to hospital in Montreal but quickly released and no details have been released on what health issues the singer is suffering from.

A statement on the Web site of the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York, announced Monday’s postponement. Meanwhile, Jackson’s planned show in New York City has been postponed from Thursday to Nov. 1.

Scheduled shows in Boston, Philadelphia, Greensboro, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale and Uncasville have all been postponed this month, in some cases only a day after looking set to go again.

The 42-year-old singer launched her Rock Witchu tour in Vancouver, Canada, on Sept. 10 in a show that the Vancouver Sun called a “high-voltage performance.” Jackson’s concerts in Los Angeles and Las Vegas sold out last month. The tour was originally scheduled to end in Dallas on Oct. 22.

Jackson’s people have repeatedly declined to release any information on what is ailing the famed singer. Janet Jackson’s career has also hit a crossroads, since during the tour she announced that she and her record company, Island Def Jam, were parting ways.

JANET JACKSON - JACKSON'S REPRESENTATIVE CONFIRMS SHE IS SUFFERING FROM VERTIGO

Posted Image

LATEST: JANET JACKSON's mystery illness has been confirmed as migraine-related vertigo - despite her brother RANDY earlier denying he had revealed she suffered from the condition.
The superstar singer has been forced to cancel nine dates on her Rock Witchu tour, after the illness stopped her from performing.
Jackson axed her first show in Montreal, Canada on 29 September (08) after checking into a city hospital.
Soon after, her brother Randy reportedly told a Michael Jackson fan site that his sister had to withdraw from the show because she suffered from vertigo - a condition which makes the sufferer feel unbalanced and dizzy.
Randy quickly denied the reports, insisting an imposter broke the bogus news, insisting the exclusive "interview never happened".
However, Jackson's representatives have now released a statement stating the star has been diagnosed with "migraine-associated vertigo" - dizziness brought on by severe headaches.
A spokesperson tells E! News, "After a thorough medical evaluation, it has been confirmed that Janet's symptoms are being caused by a rare form of migraine called vestibular migraine or migraine-associated vertigo for which she is currently receiving treatment."
And her manager, Kenneth Crear, insists the star is preparing to hit the stage again on Wednesday (15Oct08) at the Verona Center in Washington, D.C.
He adds, "Janet wanted very much to resume her tour so as not to disappoint her fans, but she continued to suffer from vertigo and could not perform.
"She's a world-class entertainer and needs to be at the top of her game to give her fans the show they expect. She's feeling much better and is ready to hit the road again to finish the tour."

THE JANET SHOW IS BACK ON: Singer performed in DC last night after bout with vertigo.

(October 16, 2008)

*Janet Jackson took the stage to exploding fireworks, clouds of smoke and the sounds of some early hits Wednesday in her first concert since she was sidelined for two weeks by a bout of vertigo, reports the AP.

Sporting a huge mohawk and light-colored body suit, the Grammy-winning performer opened with "Pleasure Principle," followed by "What Have You Done for Me Lately."

"It feels so good to be back after being down just a little bit," Jackson told the crowd at the less-than-full Verizon Center.

Last night's show marked Jackson's return to the concert trail after several show cancellations because of the vertigo condition that was finally revealed by her camp late yesterday.

That statement confirmed that that the singer was suffering from vestibular migraines, described as an unusual condition that creates the sensation of vertigo.

As previously reported, Janet's brother Randy told a Michael Jackson fansite earlier this month that his sister was suffering from vertigo, but her camp would not reveal the cause of her illness. A week later, Santa Barbara-based firm One Way Publicity released a statement denying the vertigo reports.

Jackson's show at Madison Square Garden, originally slated for tonight, has been rescheduled for Nov. 1. New dates for other cancelled shows are still being worked out

After much speculation, the cause of Janet Jackson's mystery illness – which caused her to cancel a string of tour dates – has been revealed.

The 42-year-old was suffering from vestibular migraines, her rep said in a statement, an unusual condition that creates the sensation of vertigo.

But Jackson is now receiving treatment – and she's anxious to get back on stage.

"[Janet is] a world-class entertainer and needs to be at the top of her game to give her fans the show they expect," manager Kenneth Crear said in the statement. "She's feeling much better and is ready to hit the road again."

She is scheduled to resume her Rock Witchu Tour Wednesday night at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Jackson's show at Madison Square Garden, originally slated for Thursday, has been rescheduled for Nov. 1.

New dates for the other postponed concerts are being worked out and will be announced shortly, her rep said.

Janet Jackson has a welcome return
By TIMOTHY FINN
The Kansas City Star

If she is feeling any effects of the afflictions that suspended her tour recently, Janet Jackson didn’t show it Friday night. And if the size of her crowd — around 7,500 — made her feel a little low and blue, she didn’t show that either.

Her show at the Sprint Center — in her first tour in seven years — lasted more than two hours and, except for at least eight wardrobe changes, she spent most of that time dancing, in lock-step with 10 dancers, some who looked like they might be half her age. So much for the vertigo.

Jackson draws a crowd that is as mixed as any along lines of race, age and gender. The place looked like an Obama rally.

A lot of them showed up to see the opener, LL Cool J. He was supported only by two DJs, so his sound in the arena got a little thin here and there. But when he played something classic, like “I Need Love,” “Around the Way Girl” or “Mama Said Knock You Out,” the place went a little berserk.

Jackson’s performance was mostly one long medley of more than three dozen songs; some of those excerpts were brief (like Prince does), others were longer — slightly abbreviated versions of the real things.

The place went nuttiest during songs like “Nasty,” “All For You,” “Black Cat” and “Rhythm Nation.” She reprised her usual stunt — pulling a guy out of the audience, tying him up and dominating him. This version, though, was more graphic than any I’d seen before. The look on that guy’s face — beamed on the big screen — was hilarious.

All night the place sounded a lot fuller than it was. As one ovation went on and on, Jackson stood still for about a minute and took it all in, smiling like she really meant it. I suppose she’d say, “Don’t call this a comeback,” but in some ways it felt like one.

Janet Jackson Edits Show In Detroit

By: Gary Graff

Janet Jackson made up her previously canceled show in Detroit Tuesday night (October 28), just not all of it. Jackson trimmed a three-song section of her Rock Witchu Tour at the request of Palace officials who feared it might violate a Michigan ordinance banning explicitly simulated sex acts. During one of the songs in the segment, "Discipline" -- the title track of Jackson's latest album -- dancers mime masturbation and other acts while Jackson pulls a male member of the crowd onstage, then binds and pretends to molest him.

Palace staffers brought their concerns to Jackson's camp on Tuesday afternoon, after viewing YouTube videos of the segment at previous tour stops. If a complaint were to be made and the law was deemed to have been violated, the arena and Jackson could be fined, and the Palace would face the possible suspension or loss of its liquor license. Jackson's co-manager Kenneth Crear, who was at the Palace Tuesday, ultimately agreed the segment would be dropped after a discussion with the singer.

Jackson has done the same thing on her other tours, including performances at the Palace, without incident.

The singer, who's the youngest member of the Gary, Indiana, family that produced the Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson, told the crowd of 8,000 about the issue during her encore, apologizing for having to cut the segment and saying, "We hope you enjoyed the show we gave you." She did not, however, make any mention of the postponement.

Neither Palace officials nor members of Jackson's camp were available to comment on the situation Tuesday night.

Without the segment, Jackson's show ran for two hours, featuring all or part of 34 songs ranging from past hits to material from the Discipline album.

It's very easy to turn men on being half naked or using sexual things. That is nothing special. I don't think b*** style women is sexy at all :) I am not calling Janet a b*** :lol I am speaking in general. But I don't like those kind of things as men catch for it too easy ;) For me sexy is something else :)
